1. Source for the aces scoring five or more victories in the list, "Above The Trenches" by Christopher Shores, Norman Franks and Russell Guest.
2. Observer sounds passive, the observers of 1 Sqn AFC were often more aggressive than the pilots.
3. The uniqueness of the theatre and the strange demands and problems the desert and the small population of people and aircraft in the theatre posed created many unusual claims such as the Forced To Land and Strafed or Bombed. In an attempt to give some parity and comparison with the squadrons on the Western Front I haven't counted the FTL without the plane being Destroyed or Strafed. If the plane was damaged while being Forced To Land, I haven't counted it. I also haven't counted the Driven Down claims either. Source for the pilots and observers scoring four victories or less is "One Airman's War" edited by Mark Lax.
4. Taplin's victory not counted in Above The Trenches. Above The Trenches lists Taplins first victory with 4 Sqn AFC on the 17th of July 1918 over an Albatros C class aircraft. Taplin's claim on the 17th of January over an Albatros DIII was a Forced To Land. The victory is most notable for being the squadrons only BE12a victory. Captain R.M. Smith's first victory was also a FTL claim, however the claim was confirmed with a wireless interception stating that "Schmarje had crashed". Taplin was to score 12 victories with 4 Sqn AFC including four balloons.
