AFC Wings

Charles Frederick was born in Spokane, Washington in the USA. He underwent schooling in India before living in Australia at Leongatha in Victoria. His parents lived in Peking, China. Charles enlisted in February of 1918 for the Australian Flying Corps as ground crew. He arrived at 1st Australian Wing in Tetbury on the 29th of September, 1918 for flight training.

The Sopwith Camel was well known as a tricky aircraft to fly, especially for students whose experience of aircraft was the dual seat Avro and DeHavilland aircraft. Charles Frederick was flying solo in a Sopwith Camel when the Camel suffered from an over-stressed wing structure and crashed near Sapperton. Charles Frederick was mortally wounded from the injuries sustained in the crash.
