There is a bit of confusion on catallaxyfiles as to the meaning of South Sea Republic. It is not intended to indicate pan-national trans-pacific super-statism or anything of that nature. The name comes from Louisa Lawson in her writings from the newspaper; The Republican.

Louisa Lawson wrote of the Australian colonies uniting under, "the flag of federalism, and the Great Republic of the Southern Seas." Her intimation there was Australian achievement as a republic rather than pan-nationalism. Audrey Oldfield also used the term in the title of her book, The Great Republic of the Southern Seas: Republicans in Nineteenth Century Australia .

Republicanism is a political science whereas Liberalism is a political philosophy. Republicanism is highly technologically focused using political technologies such as constitutionalism, explicit rights, separation of powers, decentralisation, limited government etc to achieve its end of maximum liberty and the eradication of tyranny.

These technological devices make no demands on the expanse of government reach territorially wise; but do restrict the size of government to one which can deliver maximum liberty and good governance concurrently.

Republicanism can include a pan-national body, and Kant argued similarly several hundred of years ago, but there is no necessity that Republicanism super-size the state especially when it is in contradiction to the goals of liberty, good governance, the absence of arbitrary government; and the individual being the dominant political entity.
