Currently Reading: Write It When I'm Gone. It is largely the autobiography of Gerald Ford from a white house corps journalist's point of view. Supposedly it gives inside access to the world and mind of Gerald Ford, but I don't think it does. It is pretty mild. The book is built up as being exceedingly intimate built on one horrific episode where Gerald Ford was honest with a young journalist and then grabbed him, making him swear to not write in an article what Gerald Ford had accidentally said. What the momentous sentence was:

"You're right," he said. "But when the pages of history are written, nobody can say I contributed to it"

It being Nixon's demise. The politically stunning sentence implied that four months before Nixon resigned Ford knew that Nixon was toast and that he was going to be the next President.

I consider that under-whelming. However the politicians and media make a great show of loyalty to who ever the current leader is and the gamesmanship of faction and who is in, who is popular, and who is not. The whole thing is remarkably close to a teenage popularity contest rather then democratic leadership.

The book is interesting, but mainly because I know so little about Gerald Ford, however, it is shallow and light. The book is easy to read because of it, but the "after I'm gone" aspects of it are nothing great, and in reality, are run of the mill.
